The Offline - Online Decision Today a battle has evolved, between offline computing and online computing. Answers are not found in the extremes but answers are found in the balance. In the beginning computers were large main frames, capable of powerful batch processing of data. As technology evolved the concept of these large computers becoming time-share computers emerged. Companies like Controlled Data Corporation (CDC) operated time-share networks around the world for large corporations. The mini-computer -- Digital Equipment Corporation and Data General brought computing power to the middle size business. The advent of the personal computer opened the door to small business and home computing. Software focused on easy to use (user-friendly) features. Because it was its own environment, it did not need to protect itself from a hostile outside environment. The development of Internet networking opened a gateway to shared resources and information, creating greater ease and flexibility in use. The connection of computers to the Internet opened a new world of accessing information from around the world. The world became our library -- with unlimited possibilities. As applications for the Internet grew into two-way, it opened the door to a security problem. We not only had access to the outside world, but the outside worldwide now had access to us.
